Art Residencies at Red House Farmhouse

At Red House Farmhouse, we are committed to fostering a creative environment where pottery and ceramic artists can develop their practice, explore new ideas, and find inspiration. Our residency programme welcomes ceramic artists from around the world, from emerging talents to established professionals, who wish to dedicate time to their craft in a peaceful rural setting.

Surrounded by nature and the charm of the Oxfordshire countryside, Red House Farmhouse offers artists the opportunity to step away from their daily routines, focus on their creative work, and enjoy the experience of living and working in a traditional English farmhouse.

Residencies at Red House Farmhouse are offered four times a year, in May, August, November, and February. Each residency cycle begins in the first week of the month, with artists able to choose between two-week and four-week stays. Exact dates will be confirmed with selected applicants.

The Pottery Studio

Pottery Wheel Work

At the heart of our residency programme is the Red House Farmhouse pottery studio, a dedicated space for ceramic artists to work, experiment, and develop their projects.

The studio is equipped with pottery wheels, kilns, worktables, and a range of tools and materials to support different ceramic techniques. Artists will have access to facilities for working with clay, glazing, and firing their pieces, allowing them to develop their projects from initial ideas to finished works.

The studio offers a welcoming setting for both focused individual practice and the informal exchange of ideas with other artists. Whether working on functional pottery, sculptural ceramics, or experimental pieces, residents are encouraged to make the most of their time in the studio.

All essential studio facilities, equipment, materials, and firing services are included in the residency fee. Artists are also welcome to bring their own tools or materials if they prefer. We encourage applicants to share any specific equipment or technical requirements in advance so that we can discuss what can be accommodated.

Accommodation and Life at Red House Farmhouse

Resident artists will stay at Red House Farmhouse, enjoying the comfort and character of a traditional English farmhouse surrounded by the Oxfordshire countryside.

Accommodation includes comfortable bedrooms, access to a fully equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi, and shared living spaces where residents can relax after a day in the studio. Artists will have access to the farmhouse's communal areas and outdoor spaces throughout their stay.

The peaceful surroundings provide an ideal setting for creative work, while the farmhouse offers opportunities to unwind, spend time outdoors, and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Artists are welcome to bring one accompanying guest, allowing them to share their stay with a partner, friend, or family member.

Creative Project Development

Throughout your stay, you will work on a self-directed pottery or ceramic arts project of your choosing. This is your time to explore your artistic vision, develop new skills, or pursue ideas that you may not have the opportunity to explore in your everyday practice.

We encourage each resident to outline their project idea and personal objectives as part of their application. However, we also recognise that creative work often takes unexpected directions, and we welcome experimentation and new approaches.

There is no requirement to complete a particular number of pieces during the residency. We value the creative process as much as the finished work and want artists to feel free to explore their ideas without unnecessary pressure.

A Lasting Connection to Red House Farmhouse

We hope that the connections made during the residency will continue beyond each artist's stay. Resident artists are welcome and encouraged to offer a piece of their work for consideration as part of the permanent gallery at Red House Farmhouse. Selected artworks may be displayed with the artist's name, celebrating the creativity and contributions of those who have spent time with us. Participation is entirely voluntary, and the selection of artworks for the gallery will be at the discretion of Red House Farmhouse.

Exploring Oxfordshire's Art Scene

Beyond the studio, resident artists will have the opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside, nearby villages, and the cultural life of Oxford and Oxfordshire.

Depending on the dates of their stay, artists may also have the opportunity to attend local art events, including:

Oxfordshire Artweeks, which takes place in May and brings together artists, studios, and exhibitions across the county.
Oxford Ceramics Fair, an event showcasing the work of ceramic artists and makers.

These events offer opportunities to discover the work of other artists, meet members of the local creative community, and find inspiration beyond the farmhouse.

We encourage residents to explore the region during their free time and make the most of the cultural experiences available during their visit.

Please note that attendance at these events depends on their confirmed dates and whether they coincide with the residency period.

Getting Here

Red House Farmhouse is nestled in the peaceful Oxfordshire countryside, offering a secluded retreat surrounded by nature while remaining within easy reach of Oxford's vibrant city centre.

Despite its tranquil rural setting, the farmhouse is just a 10-minute drive from Oxford Train Station, with a bus stop nearby providing convenient connections to the city. Oxford can also be easily reached by bicycle or car, allowing resident artists to enjoy the best of both worlds: the peace and quiet of the countryside and the cultural life and amenities of a historic university city.

During their stay, artists can explore Oxford's museums, galleries, independent shops, cafés, restaurants, and historic streets. The city also offers a lively arts scene, with exhibitions, cultural events, and opportunities to discover the work of local artists and makers.

For those travelling from further afield, Oxford has regular train and bus connections to London and other major UK cities, making Red House Farmhouse accessible to both UK-based and international artists.

At Red House Farmhouse, artists can enjoy the space and tranquillity of a countryside retreat without feeling disconnected from the city and its cultural offerings.

The Residency Experience

We understand that financial circumstances can sometimes limit opportunities for creative development. To help make the residency accessible to a wider range of artists, scholarships may be offered based on the applications received.

Scholarships may cover the full residency fee or provide partial financial assistance. The level of support will be determined individually, based on the applicant's proposed project, motivation, financial circumstances, and the availability of scholarship funding.

Artists wishing to be considered for a scholarship should indicate this in their application and submit a short motivation letter explaining their interest in the residency and why financial support would be beneficial.
